A Story of an Osprey Couple in Jamaica Bay (April 2025) 牙买加湾一对鱼鹰的故事 (2025年4月)

Each spring, a pair of osprey makes its home on one of the man-made platforms by the water in Jamaica Wild Life Refuge near JFK airport . I’m never sure if it’s the same couple returning or new residents moving in, but they always seem content to settle down and raise their family in that exact spot.

每年春天，总有一对鱼鹰在牙买加湾野生动物保护区（靠近JFK机场）水边的人工平台上筑巢安家。我说不准是不是同一对老住户年年归来，还是新情侣搬进来，但他们总是看起来很满足地在那个老地方定居、生儿育女。

Here’s a short story about this osprey couple in the end of April this year. It was an overcast morning, just at the crack of dawn. On a tidal flat, a lone osprey—likely the female—sat in a solitary, man-made nest, incubating eggs. She cried out, “ji-ji,” as if calling for her mate.

这是今年四月底关于这对鱼鹰夫妇的一段小故事。早春阴天的清晨，天刚蒙蒙亮。在滩涂上孤零零耸立着的人工鸟窝上，一只孤单的鱼鹰——大概是雌鸟——坐在巢中孵蛋，一边发出“ji-ji”的叫声，似乎在呼唤她的伴侣。

A few minutes later, the male osprey arrived, a half-eaten fish clutched in his talons. But he didn’t deliver the meal immediately. Instead, he scanned his surroundings warily and snuck another bite for himself.

几分钟后，一只雄性鱼鹰飞来了，双爪握着一条已咬了一口的鱼。只是他先没有急着送到巢里，而是警觉地四处张望，还偷咬了一口。

The female, clearly displeased, called out incessantly. Her complaints were loud enough to be heard from a great distance.Reluctantly, the male flew down and offered her the fish. But it was too late. The female was furious. She refused his offering, pushing him away to make her displeasure known.

雌鸟似乎对他的行为很是不满，不停地叫唤，像是在抱怨，声音很大，很远都能听见。无奈之下，雄鸟从高处飞下，把食物递给了雌鸟。然而似乎为时已晚——雌鸟很生气，拒绝接受他的鱼。她推开了他，明确表示不满。

The male had no choice but to fly off with his rejected meal. He circled in the air, too anxious to leave for good. A short while later, he returned to the nest, as if asking for forgiveness. Finally, she accepted him.

雄鸟只好带着鱼飞走，在空中盘旋，但始终放心不下。不久后，他又飞回巢中，似乎在请求原谅。雌鸟最后接受了他。
