The Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) and the Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) are both migratory shorebirds commonly found in coastal mudflats, sandy beaches, estuaries, and intertidal wetlands. They rely on keen eyesight to locate prey, feeding mainly on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and other small invertebrates. The Black-bellied Plover is larger, with a longer bill and legs; breeding males have a distinctive black belly and are often found on open mudflats. The Semipalmated Plover is smaller, with a short, stout bill, orange-yellow legs, and a prominent black breast band, favoring sandy beaches and shorelines. Both species depend on healthy wetland ecosystems and undertake long-distance migrations across the Americas.
