The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is a large, distinctive wading bird characterized by its vivid rose-pink plumage, elongated spatulate bill, and bare greenish facial skin. Distributed throughout tropical and subtropical wetlands of the Americas, it inhabits coastal lagoons, mangrove forests, estuaries, and freshwater marshes. Using tactile foraging behavior, it sweeps its specialized bill through shallow water to detect and capture small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and aquatic invertebrates. In Costa Rica, the species is primarily associated with coastal wetland habitats, including mangrove systems and tidal flats, where it serves as an iconic indicator of healthy aquatic ecosystems.
