The Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus), Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus), Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), and Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius) are all migratory shorebirds commonly found in coastal wetlands, mudflats, estuaries, and freshwater margins. They share adaptations for probing and searching for aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and other small prey. However, they differ markedly in morphology and foraging strategies. The Black-necked Stilt is recognized by its extremely long pink legs and needle-like bill for shallow-water feeding. The Long-billed Curlew has the longest curved bill among North American shorebirds, while the Whimbrel has a shorter, down-curved bill and striped head pattern. The Spotted Sandpiper is smaller, with a distinctive teetering behavior and spotted breeding plumage.
