The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a large coastal seabird distinguished by its long bill, expandable throat pouch, and graceful flight. Found along tropical and subtropical coastlines, it is an expert plunge-diver, capturing fish by diving from the air. In Costa Rica, it is commonly observed along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, estuaries, and mangrove habitats.
