The Common Black Hawk (Buteogallus anthracinus) is a widespread resident raptor in Costa Rica, commonly found along rivers, mangroves, estuaries, and coastal wetlands. An opportunistic hunter, it feeds on crabs, fish, frogs, reptiles, and other small animals, often searching patiently from a perch before striking. Frequently seen soaring over wetlands or perched near water, the Common Black Hawk is one of Costa Rica’s most recognizable birds of prey and a favorite subject for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers.
