The Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) is a large, terrestrial falcon easily recognized by its distinct black crest, bare orange-red facial skin, whitish neck, and boldly contrasting plumage. Widely distributed across open savannas, dry forests, and agricultural lands, this unique raptor frequently forages on foot. As an opportunistic scavenger and active predator, it feeds on carrion, small vertebrates, and invertebrates. Exceptional cognitive ability, resourcefulness, and highly flexible foraging habits allow the species to thrive in both natural wilderness and human-modified landscapes.
