In Kenya, the elephant is the largest animal based on their overall size and weight. As of September 2021, Kenya was home to approximately 35,000 to 40,000 elephants, making it one of the significant populations of these majestic creatures in Africa.
These elephants predominantly inhabit various national parks and wildlife reserves across Kenya, such as Maasai Mara, Tsavo, Amboseli, and Samburu. They thrive in diverse ecosystems, ranging from savannas to dense forests and swamps, adapting to a wide range of habitats. The primary food source for Kenyan elephants is vegetation, including grasses, leaves, fruits, and bark.
Elephants in Kenya exhibit complex and tight-knit family structures. They live in matriarchal herds led by an experienced and wise elder female. These herds are often composed of related females and their young, forming a strong and supportive social network. Male elephants tend to be more solitary, joining female herds during mating seasons. Elephants are known to mate throughout the year, so we luckily have an opportunity to watch a complete mating process of female and male elephants in Amboseli national park.

Elephant mating is a natural behavior. Males may engage in courtship behavior to attract a receptive females. This can include displays of strength and dominance, such as head swinging, trumpeting, and approaching the female. Female elephants have a say in the mating process. They can choose whether to accept or reject the advances of a male. If a female is not in estrus (the period when she is fertile and receptive to mating), she is likely to reject the male’s advancesWhen a female is in estrus and receptive to mating, she will allow the chosen male to mate with her. Whwn mating, where the male inserts his penis into the female’s reproductive tract. This process is typically not violent or forced, as it is a natural part of their reproductive behavior.
