The Golden-browed Chlorophonia (Chlorophonia callophrys) is a dazzling little finch and one of the most beautiful avian jewels of Costa Rica and western Panama. Despite measuring only about 13 cm (5.1 inches) in length, its brilliant emerald-green plumage, golden-yellow brow, and vivid blue crown make it an unforgettable sight.

This species inhabits moist montane and cloud forests, typically at elevations above 750 meters, where it spends most of its time high in the forest canopy. Quiet and often elusive, the Golden-browed Chlorophonia moves deliberately through the treetops in search of small fruits, berries, and mistletoe, which make up the majority of its diet. Rather than loud calls, it communicates with soft, high-pitched whistles that blend seamlessly into the forest soundscape. Usually encountered in pairs or small family groups, it may also join mixed-species foraging flocks outside the breeding season, offering patient birdwatchers and photographers a rewarding glimpse of one of the cloud forest’s most exquisite inhabitants.

The male is exceptionally striking: its upperparts are a brilliant, glossy emerald green, while the underparts glow with a rich golden-yellow belly. Its most distinctive feature is a wide, bold golden-yellow stripe that arches prominently above the eye, giving the species its common name. Completing the male’s vivid palette is a neat violet-blue cap that covers the crown and nape, creating a stunning contrast against the green.

雄性尤为与众不同：其上体呈鲜艳、有光泽的翠绿色，而下体则闪耀着浓郁的金黄色腹部。其最显著的特征是一条宽而醒目的金黄色条纹，醒目地拱起于眼睛上方，该物种的常用名即源于此。雄性鲜亮色彩组合的点睛之笔是一顶整齐的紫蓝色顶冠，覆盖头顶和后颈，与绿色形成令人惊艳的对比。

The female, though more subdued, possesses her own charm, with a greenish breast and lacking the bold golden brow, but she still retains subtle blue tones on the head.
