The Green Ibis (Mesembrinibis cayennensis) is a secretive wading bird inhabiting the wetlands, riverbanks, and flooded forests of Costa Rica’s tropical lowlands. Although its name suggests a green bird, its plumage appears dark chestnut to black, shimmering with an iridescent green and bronze gloss in sunlight. Using its long, curved bill, it probes soft mud and shallow water for insects, crustaceans, worms, small fish, and amphibians. Usually seen alone or in pairs, the Green Ibis is quiet and wary, often remaining hidden beneath dense vegetation. Its slow, graceful flight is a delight to watch.
