The Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher (Ptiliogonys caudatus) is a stunning highland bird and a prized sighting for birdwatchers visiting Costa Rica. Endemic to the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama, it inhabits cloud forests and montane woodlands, typically at elevations above 1,500 meters. Males are striking with silky gray plumage, a distinctive black face mask, bright yellow belly, and an exceptionally long tail. Often seen in pairs or small groups, they feed mainly on fruits, berries, and insects. Their elegant appearance, graceful movements, and preference for misty mountain habitats make them one of the most memorable birds of Central America’s cloud forests.
