Osprey Fishing Show in Southern New Jersey (Spring-Summer 2026)

These photographs were taken at Union lake dam at Southern New Jersey during the spring and early summer. Dozens of Ospreys nest in the surrounding woodlands. While some are year-round residents, most are migratory birds that return each spring from warmer regions to breed and raise their young.

With the arrival of spring, the Ospreys become busy with the demands of family life. The dam provides an abundant food supply, as the rushing water below the falls attracts large numbers of fish downstream. For the Ospreys, it is an ideal place to hunt, nest, and raise their chicks.

From early spring through early summer, bird photographers patiently gather in the small park around the dam, waiting for the perfect opportunity to capture an Osprey plunging into the water and emerging with a fish. The wait can be long, but the reward is spectacular. An Osprey may suddenly dive from the sky, plunge into the water, and emerge with its catch, while its hungry offspring wait nearby, calling impatiently for food. These are the unforgettable moments that attract many return to the dam again and again.

There are far too many memorable photographs to share in a single post, so I have selected a series that focuses primarily on the most dramatic moments: Ospreys diving for fish, making the catch, and carrying their hard-earned meals back to the nest to feed their chicks.
