On a day of early March, when we walked out the airport of San Juan, warm and vibrant air immediately embraced us, and we felt this is a welcoming city, so different from all other cities in the continental of USA.

San Juan is a American city because it is city of an unincorporated territory of the United States, but more like a Caribbean city because its culture (its music, food, and festivals) and population originated from Hispanic heritage. With a population of around 2.2 million people, San Juan is founded in 1521 by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León, the most populous city in Puerto Rico, and the second oldest city established by European colonists in the Americas.

We stayed in the CBD, very close to the Old San Juan, or Old Town. Old town is the historic district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The neighborhood is located on a small island connected to the mainland by three bridges, and it is the oldest settlement within the territory of Puerto Rico. Old San Juan is famous for its colorful colonial-era buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and charming plazas, which have been preserved for over 500 years.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Old San Juan is the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century fortress that sits at the entrance to San Juan Bay. The fort, along with the nearby Castillo San Cristobal, was built by the Spanish to protect the city from foreign invaders and is now a popular tourist attraction.

The neighborhood also features numerous museums, including the Museum of the Americas, which showcases the art and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art, which houses a vast collection of Puerto Rican and Latin American art.

Old San Juan is also known for its vibrant culinary scene, with numerous restaurants serving up traditional Puerto Rican dishes such as mofongo, arroz con gandules, and lechon. The neighborhood is also home to numerous bars and nightclubs, making it a popular destination for nightlife in San Juan.

Overall, Old San Juan is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Puerto Rican culture and history. The neighborhood’s vibrant atmosphere, stunning architecture, and rich cultural heritage make it a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction known for its stunning views and daily cannon firing tradition.

Connected to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal is another historic fortress located in other end of Old San Juan. Also built by the Spanish between 1765 and 1783, and named after King Charles III of Spain, the fortress was designed to complement the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, forming a defensive system for the entrance to San Juan Bay.

Castillo San Cristóbal is one of the largest forts built by the Spanish in the Americas, covering 27 acres of land. It features a complex network of tunnels, ramps, and walls, including the iconic Garita del Diablo (Devil’s Sentry Box) watchtower, which offers panoramic views of the city and the sea.

Harbor sunset

As the sun begins to set over the harbor around Castillo San Cristobal in San Juan, the sky comes alive with a stunning array of colors. The warm, golden hues of the sun gradually give way to deep shades of orange, pink, and red, casting a warm glow over the surrounding water and landscape.

In between, many boats were passing the harbor under the Sun. The glory of sun immersed the boats and and the boats carried the golden color away slowly. Time seemd golden as well as the reflection of water.

As the light fades, the sky takes on a moody, atmospheric quality, with the shadows of the fort and the boats in the harbor stretching out across the water. The air cools, and the gentle sound of lapping waves provides a peaceful background to the breathtaking scene.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky explodes into a final burst of vivid color, before fading into darkness. The twinkling lights of the city come to life, providing a magical backdrop to the peaceful harbor scene.

The permanent collection includes works by renowned Puerto Rican artists such as José Campeche, Francisco Oller, and Lorenzo Homar, as well as pieces by international artists such as Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró.

In addition to its permanent collection, the Museum of Art of San Juan also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing the work of both established and emerging artists from Puerto Rico and beyond. We were lucky that modern art exhibition was open to public during our visit. I took a few photos of paintings, mainly modern art, that touched me.
