The Spix’s Guan (Penelope jacquacu) and Gray-headed Chachalaca (Ortalis cinereiceps) are medium-to-large members of the guan family (Cracidae) found in Costa Rica. Both are primarily arboreal, feeding on fruits, seeds, flowers, and leaves, and play an important role in seed dispersal.

However, the Spix’s Guan prefers mature lowland rainforests and has dark brown plumage with fine white spotting and a reddish throat dewlap. The Gray-headed Chachalaca is more adaptable, inhabiting forest edges, secondary growth, and dry forests. It has a gray head, olive-brown body, and a long tail, and is best known for its loud, chorus-like calls at dawn and dusk.
