The herons of Costa Rica are a diverse group of long-legged wading birds inhabiting rivers, wetlands, mangroves, lagoons, and estuaries. They share common adaptations, including elongated necks, pointed bills, and specialized hunting techniques for capturing fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates. Costa Rica’s notable species include the Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Green Heron, and Boat-billed Heron. They differ in size, plumage, and behavior: the Great Blue Heron is the largest, Snowy Egret is highly active while foraging, Green Heron uses ambush tactics, and Boat-billed Heron is primarily nocturnal.
