Birding in NYC and vicinity (2021-2022) 鸟片，在纽约市及附近地区观鸟（2021-2022 年）

Birding is one of my favorite activities during the spring and early summer. There are quite a few birding spots around New York city, and each location has unique bird species for watching. Following are the most frequent places where I have been visiting and birds that I have observed.

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is located in the south portion of both Brooklyn and Queens, near John F. Kennedy International Airport. It  consists of several islands in Jamaica bay, encompassing over 12,600 acres of water, saltmarshes, freshwater and man-made brackish water ponds, upland fields and woods, and so on.

This one of the largest bird habitats in the northeastern United States is the best place in NYC to observe more than 300 migrating bird species. Each season has different kind of bird species in the sanctuary (Click the link for detail) , so birding is good for a year round. In this place, one may have a chance to watch snow Goose Brant, various species of ducks, raptors including Cooper’s Hawks and Peregrine Falcon, Barn Owl, possible Great Horned Owl and Bald Eagle.

This place is my favorite for birding. Because it is a relatively far away from the center city, there are no many people visiting there, even in Weekend. You can spend whole day there quietly just for birding.

The Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch is located on the 350-acre Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary in Bedford Corners, New York. The watch station is an open deck on the ridge, facing east. Below the ridge, is the I-95 highway passing through. 

The Hawkwatch and the Sanctuary are parts of the Taconic Mountains. The mountains form an unique geographic structure so that the unique sounds along the this area forms invisible wall, forcing the migrating raptors into an inland bottleneck within the mountains and directly over the Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch. The raptors migrate from their northern breeding grounds of Quebec, Canada, and northern New England to their wintering grounds in the southern United States, and Central and South America.

Depending upon the seasons, the watch stop is the great place to observe spectacular Broad-winged Hawk migration in mid- to late September, Red-shouldered Hawks in late October and early November, and Golden Eagles and goshawks from late October through November.

The park and sanctuary was named after American environmentalist, who helped preserve open space and protect watercourses and wetlands in Westchester County. It is located on the shore of the Long Island Sound. The central habitat features the 85-acre Playland Lake, a brackish lake with a mixture of salt and fresh water, located within Rye Playland amusement park. The lake hosts thousands of migrant and wintering birds in mixed species flocks, including waterfowl, Greater Scaup, White-winged Scoters, Surf Scoters, and Northern Gannets. The site is used as a foraging area for adequate numbers of wading birds including Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and Black-crowned Night-Herons. According to Audubon Society of New York, other migrant birds were found in the area, such as such as Common Loons (six in December 1994), Pied-billed Grebes (two in November 1996), Northern Harriers (one in May 1995), Red-shouldered Hawks (one in November 1994), American Woodcocks (at least three pairs), Common Terns (12 in July 1995), Black Terns (three in May 1995), Black Skimmers (two in June 1995), Willow Flycatchers (breed), and Yellow-breasted Chats (breed; one in December 1995).

The sanctuary has been recognized by the national Audubon Society of New York as an Important Bird Area, attributable to its wide varieties of bird species and important migratory flyway.

Birding here is my great pleasure in my leisure time. The park is not far way from where I live, and the most important is that I am birding in the wild green land and beautiful long island seashore!
