The Brown-Hooded Parrot (Pyrilia haematotis) is a medium-sized parrot native to the humid tropical lowlands and foothills of Costa Rica, particularly on the Caribbean slope. Easily identified by its distinct dark brown head, pale eye-ring, and vivid pinkish-red patch behind the eyes, its body is primarily a rich green. Though they blend seamlessly into the dense forest canopy while quietly foraging on fruits and seeds, they are spectacular in flight, revealing a flash of brilliant red underwings. They are most commonly spotted traveling in small, energetic flocks, filling the rainforest with their high-pitched, musical calls
