The Clay-colored Thrush (Turdus grayi) and Sooty Thrush (Turdus nigrescens) are medium-sized thrushes commonly found in Costa Rica. Both belong to the thrush family (Turdidae) and feed on fruits, insects, and other small invertebrates. The Clay-colored Thrush is widespread in lowlands and urban areas, with plain brown plumage, a pale throat, and a melodious song; it is Costa Rica’s national bird. The Sooty Thrush is a highland species restricted mainly to montane forests, especially above 1,500 meters. It has darker sooty-brown plumage, a yellowish bill, and prefers cooler cloud forest habitats. Their different distributions reflect their adaptation to distinct environments.
