Woodpeckers (family Picidae) are a diverse group of birds recognized for their strong bills, specialized skull structure, and climbing ability. They use their powerful beaks to drill into tree bark in search of insects, larvae, and sometimes fruits or sap. Costa Rica is home to many woodpecker species, including the Acorn Woodpecker, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Hoffmann’s Woodpecker, Lineated Woodpecker, Pale-billed Woodpecker, and Hairy Woodpecker. Species vary greatly in size, plumage, and habitat preference, from dry forests and open woodlands to humid tropical rainforests. Many males have colorful red crowns, and their distinctive drumming serves for communication and territory defense.
