The King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) is one of the largest and most captivating raptors soaring over Costa Rica’s lowland rainforests. In Mayan mythology, their massive size and otherworldly colors earned them revered status as sacred messengers between gods and mortals.

With a wingspan reaching up to two meters, the King Vulture is draped in creamy white plumage contrasted by ink-black flight feathers, all set off by a soft, slate-gray collar. Most astonishing is its featherless head—a striking, colorful tapestry of red, orange, yellow, and blue skin, crowned by a peculiar golden caruncle on its orange bill. Its piercing, icy-white eyes possess razor-sharp vision, scanning the canopy from high above.

These majestic birds quietly inhabit pristine primary rainforests below 1,200 meters, with Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific lowlands being prime spotting territory. Lacking a vocal organ, they are virtually silent, producing only low hisses or bill-snaps when threatened or courting. You need only glance at a photograph of this creature to understand why it is called the undisputed “King.”

它们隐秘地栖息在海拔1200米以下的原始雨林，尤以南太平洋低地最为常见。王鹫天生失声，无法鸣叫，仅在警示或求偶时发出低沉的嘶嘶声。只要凝视一张它的照片，你便能瞬间领悟，何为自然界无可争议的“雨林之王”。
