The Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias) is an elegant, heron-like bird native to Central and South America. As the sole living member of its family, it exclusively inhabits the well-wooded edges of slow-moving streams, rivers, and flooded swamps with muddy banks. At rest, the bird is small and highly camouflaged in mottled browns, grays, and blacks, resembling fallen leaves. When threatened, however, it spreads its broad wings and tail to reveal a brilliant sunburst pattern featuring striking red, yellow, and black “eyespots.” This set of photos was taken along a river where the birds nested in a nearby tree.
