The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), often referred to as the “Cape buffalo,” is a formidable and iconic herbivore found across sub-Saharan Africa. They are considered one of the “Big Five” African animals sought after by big-game hunters.

African buffaloes are large, with a shoulder height of 1.2 to 1.7 meters (4 to 5.6 feet) and weighing between 500 to 900 kilograms (1,100 to 2,000 pounds). They possess dark gray to black fur and massive, curved horns that extend outward and then curve upward from the base. Both males and females have horns, although those of males tend to be thicker and more massive.

Buffaloes are social animals, forming herds of varying sizes, often led by older females. They are known for their unpredictable temperament and can be dangerous when provoked or threatened.

Buffaloes graze on a variety of grasses and are often seen near water sources. They inhabit a range of environments, including grasslands, savannas, woodlands, and even swamps. They are adaptable and can thrive in different ecological niches.
